Bivalent Vaccine Information
On September 1st, 2022, the CDC authorized an updated version of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines to be given as booster doses for adolescents and adults ages 12 and up. These vaccines target the Omicron variants of the virus which are now most common. The updated vaccines are referred to as "bivalent" since they are designed to protect against mutliple versions of the virus.
- On October 12th the CDC expanded their approval to include children ages 5-11.
- On December 9th the CDC expanded their approval to include children ages 6 months - 4 years.
- On April 18th, 2023, the CDC amended their bivalent vaccine authorization to remove the requirement for a monovalent primary series and to recommend the bivalent vaccine to everyone ages 6 months and older, regardless of previous COVID vaccination status.

Who can receive the bivalent vaccine?
Anyone ages 6 months and up can receive a bivalent vaccine, regardless of previous vaccination status. Most individuals only need a single dose of the bivalent vaccine.
Adults age 65 and older and immunocompromised individuals can receive an additional bivalent vaccine dose at least four months after their initial bivalent vaccine.
If you have already received your updated bivalent COVID-19 vaccine, and you are not over age 65 or immunocompromised, you do not need to take any action at this time.
Walk-Up clinics for vaccinations - no appointments needed
All COVID-19 vaccinations are 100% free!
The Baltimore City Health Department recommends that all eligible residents receive the mRNA vaccine - Moderna or Pfizer. If an individual 18 years and older is unable to receive a mRNA vaccine due to a history of allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, or other contraindication a Johnson & Johnson or Novavax vaccine may be given.
